Me gusta mucho la edición de vídeo. Es una tarea que me relaja desde hace mucho tiempo. Y si puedo meter algún efecto de vez en cuando, mejor. Me encanta investigar e inventar. Aunque, a veces, la mejor forma de transmitir conocimiento, una idea o dar a conocer tu trabajo es de forma audiovisual.
Aquí viene el dilema, desde hace más de 10 años soy usuario exclusivo de GNU/Linux. Al principio, como muchas personas, empecé haciendo arranque dual con Windows, aunque siempre he sido de no apagar el ordenador, de dejarlo por la noche haciendo algo, o al menos encendido para seguir por donde me quedé el día anterior (costumbre que empezó con Windows, porque al hibernar o al suspender tenía muchos problemas para levantar de nuevo el estado del equipo, incluso con los drivers oficiales y actualizados de todo; aunque en GNU/Linux también me ha pasado alguna vez). El caso es que, da una pereza enorme tener que arrancar otro sistema operativo para hacer una tarea, abandonando todo lo que tienes arrancado que, en cualquier momento puedes necesitar.

Edición de vídeo profesional en GNU/Linux
Además, a pesar de que cada vez hay más software privativo para edición de vídeo GNU/Linux, como LightWorks, que cuesta unos 20€ mensuales (lo puedes probar de forma gratis, pero está muy limitado), o DaVinci Resolve, que tiene una modalidad gratuita, no libre, y otra de pago, cosa que está muy bien, o incluso Autodesk Maya,. Además, la industria cinematográfica y de efectos especiales trabaja con equipos GNU/Linux desde hace mucho tiempo. El problema es que casi todo el software utilizado es propio de cada estudio (encima, muchos de ellos utilizan Python para muchas tareas) y no está disponible siquiera para poder comprarlo, o son plugins para programas muy caros. Aunque siempre se escapan, por ejemplo RenderMan y Tractor de Pixar. En este caso, te lo puedes descargar y utilizar gratis siempre que no sea para fines comerciales (es gratis, no libre).
Y se suele decir que en GNU/Linux no tenemos software libre de calidad para realizar montaje, edición o efectos de vídeo. Y, aunque es cierto que, profesionalmente, no estamos a la altura de todo el software que se hace para estudios profesionales, creo que a día de hoy con ciertos programas se pueden conseguir resultados muy buenos.
Desde este blog, quiero empezar un análisis de todas aquellas opciones que tenemos actualmente, a día de hoy. Y quiero ser lo más realista posible, porque en mayor o menor medida, todos los programas de los que voy a hablar los he probado. Y quiero hablar de configuraciones por defecto, es decir, instalar una distribución GNU/Linux e instalar el programa en cuestión. Sin hackear demasiado, ni tener que investigar. Porque es muy común, por Internet, ver cómo muchas personas recomiendan un programa que, al final, para muchos usuarios resulta muy inestable y no termina siendo una opción realista.
Desde aquí no quiero meterme con desarrolladores e ingenieros que depositan su tiempo y su alma en estos proyectos. Es más, he colaborado en algunos de ellos, ya sea con traducciones, enviando bugs, depurando, enviando código, etc. Sólo quiero decir, que para ciertos programas, aún queda trabajo por hacer y no recomiendo utilizarlos en algún trabajo serio, grande, o si no tienes ganas de aventurarte a ver errores. Ya que, muchas veces, a un nuevo usuario de este sistema operativo, le pueden recomendar un programa que resulta que no es muy estable y ya no quiere volver a hablar de GNU/Linux en la vida.
